Background: Sakumo was a famous and powerful ninja of Konohagakure who, during his life, was greater than even the Sannin. His son, Kakashi, idolized him and sought to become just as great a ninja as his father; his wife had died when Kakashi was very young. Five years before the events Kakashi Gaiden, Sakumo and his team were sent on a mission of great importance to Konoha. When his teammates' lives were endangered, Sakumo chose to abandon the mission in order to save them. He was disgraced when he returned home, shunned by everyone in the village, even those he had saved. Dishonored, Sakumo fell into a deep depression, as well as a drop in his skills. Eventually, he committed suicide, which caused Kakashi to live strictly according to the Ninja Code for the next few years.

Part 2: After Kakashi is killed by Pain during the invasion of Pain, he finds himself in an area of darkness, where Sakumo meets up with his son to talk of his life. Sakumo lamented the idea that they both died young; though not as young as his wife. Kakashi said that he understood his sacrifice for the sake of all the villagers. Then Kakashi finally forgives Sakumo and said that he was proud of him. When a ray of light beamed down upon Kakashi, Sakumo told Kakashi that he has still a lot of things to do and Sakumo was glad that he was able to speak to Kakashi and that he's thankful that his son had forgiven him. After Kakashi disappears, he said that he can finally move on and see his wife again.

Appearance: Sakumo's appearance has regularly been compared to that of Kakashi, often when Kakashi is mistaken for his father. He possesses the same white-colored hair with the addition of a long ponytail similar to Jiraiya's, and a mess of hair on his head that hangs over his head protector. His facial features are more distinguished compared to Kakashi's visible ones.

Personality: Sakumo was a very kind and loyal man. Despite his tremendous fame and power as a ninja, he was a very humble man, which made his only son Kakashi truly look up to and idolize him. He had a deep devotion to his country and an even greater commitment to his allies and loved ones to the point he would put their well-being before anything else. His commitment was so great that he would sacrifice the completion of a mission in order to save his teammates which led to him being a public figure of hate and ridicule.

Abilities: Like his son, Sakumo was a gifted shinobi praised for his talents in the ninja arts even by the likes of Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage. In battle, Sakumo was a truly powerful shinobi, his prowess surpassing that of the Sannin. The mere idea of facing Sakumo brought fear to enemies, as shown from the reaction of an Iwagakure shinobi initially believing Kakashi to be his father. His primary weapon during battle was a tanto called the White Light Chakra Sabre that would emit a trail of white chakra when swung, earning him the nickname "Konoha's White Fang". After he died, he left his tanto to Kakashi, which was later on cut in half when Kakashi fought an Iwagakure shinobi.

The White Light Chakra Sabre was a blade originally made by Sakumo Hatake. The White Light Chakra Sabre is a small tanto which held a secret white chakra energy so that when it is swung a ray out white light and chakra slide out behind it. The blade is capable of leaving a trail which can burst in a small explodion on a target, crushing them in a burst of white energy.

This technique allows the user to make a shadow clone infused with lightning. Because it is a shadow clone, it is able to perform jutsu and interact with the environment due to it having physical substance. If the clone is injured, it will revert to its natural lightning-state, at the same time electrocuting whatever it is touching.

White Light Ant Sting (Hakke Aridan)

As Sakumo comes at the target, Sakumo releases a slice with his blade at the target, but this is suppose to be done at a distance. Using his tanto and chakra, Sakumo releases a strong wave from his blade which slices through the air. The wave splits into multiple senbon shape needles which fly at the target, striking them and sending lightning into them.

White Light Violent Slash (Hakko Rappazan)

Using his legendary speed, Sakumo withdraws his legendary White Light Chakra Sabre, rushing at the target as he flips and sends a violent slash at the target. The white chakra withdraws from his blade, stretching out in a wave of white light which soars foward and strikes into the target, easily slicing right through them.

White Void Teloportation (Hakku Shunshin no Jutsu)

The legendary teloportation which was used by Sakumo Hatake with the speed of his legendary fang, Sakumo warps to some degree with great speed to a close by location. Unlike Minato Namikaze's Flying Thunder God Technique, Sakumo can not warp anywhere he wants to. Sakumo can only move with high speed, and only to a location in which he can see from a distance. This is a high speed form of body flicker which involves his white light chakra fang, usually allowing him to strike a opponent with his attacks.

Similiar to Kakashi's summoning technique which summons hounds to spread out underground, This technique releases multiple lightning volts through the ground from Sakumo's hand. As Sakumo puts his hand to the ground, Sakumo release lightning like chakra to tunnel and track a target, then emerging from the earth and coming from under them and striking into them, paralyzing them.

White Lightning Fang Projectile Technique (Hakrai Kibadan no Jutsu)

The White Lightning Fang Projectile Technique is a legendary technique which involves both the White Light Chakra Sasbre and Sakumo's Lightning Element channeled through it. Sakumo whips his tanto out, sending chakra through it which fuses with the white chakra, turning into white electricity which powers the tanto. Once ready Sakumo releases the lightning from the Tanto sending a powerful bolt of lightning from its tip to shoot at the target like a bullet.

This jutsu is a sealing technique used by Sakumo Hatake with the help and support of his White Light Chakra Sabre. This move is Sakumo's most powerful sealing technique, capable of summoning strong forces and beast, but it is unknown if he can seal Bijuu like some of the other Leaf Village Sealing Technique's. To prepare this jutsu, Sakumo has to create a large barrier orb around him and the host, which will block out all people who try to interfere. As the barrier is formed sakumo creates the Magic White Light Beacons, which allow him to create long threads of chakra and connect to the host, allowing him to work more. Since the host is now pumped with white light chakra, Sakumo uses his own blood on the tip of the sabre and draws the seal for "Hell" on the top of the host chest, then the seal for heaven on the bottom, and using a special seal the two spin together and form a swirled design much like Minato's seal.

This technique is a special Taijutsu move used by Sakumo Hatake. Using his great speed and power, Sakumo propels himself across the feild at the target with great speed, Coming at them as he body flickers behind them on both his hands and spins. Using the hand stands, Sakumo does a spin with his legs in a three sixty motion as chakra runs through them, making powerful blades from his toes which can easily strike into a target and injure them. The name Scorpion is given to how Sakumo 'stings' the target with his Chakra Feet.

This move can also be used in air to crash down into them and crush them into the ground.

This technique is a special Taijutsu move which borrows chakra from the White Light Chakra Sabre to form threads of white light chakra to Sakumo's palm. Sakumo draws the light to his palm as he comes at the enemy, gathering a barrier around his hand as white light forms a glowing chakra stream around it. Sakumo then crushes his palm against a target and releases the chakra in a explosion combined with his fist.

This technique is a chakra Ninjutsu technique used by Sakumo Hatake which borrows White Light Chakra from the White Light Chakra Sabre. Once the seals are released Sakumo puts his hands together as the light flashes in his palms, forming a ball of white light. When ready Sakumo opens his hands and releases a blinding light so that no one on the feild can see.

This jutsu lets the user quickly switch places with another nearby object, such as a plant (normally a section of a log), an animal, or even another person within reach, leaving the opponent open to a counter-attack. Exploding tags can be attached to the replacement for an added surprise. Fundamentally, all ninja know this technique.

The anime has a number of other objects being used for this jutsu, such as a boulder, mud, a scarecrow, and even a large rolled-up carpet. These items are usually nowhere in sight, suggesting that they are merely gags meant to lighten up the situation and not an actual part of the jutsu. Additionally, the normal practice of switching places with a section of log is done in several places that have no such thing anywhere nearby.

This technique is sometimes referred to as the Art of Projection ("Utsusemi no Jutsu") in other manga and anime series.

This jutsu allows the user to assume the appearance of another person, animal, or object. This is one of the basic jutsu taught at the Konohagakure Ninja Academy. Fundamentally, all ninja know this jutsu. The transformation technique is considered to be among the more difficult E-ranked techniques, since it requires constant emission of chakra while mentally maintaining the form. On top of that, the user would be, most likely, interacting with the environment. This puts much mental strain on the inexperienced ninja.

Tsunade has mastered the ability to the point where she always appears like a young woman. However, if she loses chakra, the transformation will slowly disappear and her true appearance will show.

Flying Tool is a standard ninja skill which allows a ninja to store an assortment of items or weapons within summoning scrolls, as a means of concealing them or simply to make traveling easier. When needed, the owner will open one of the scroll and activate the seals releasing their item or weapon of choice. Puppets can have these scrolls hidden inside various compartments as a means of increasing their own killing potential as well as hiding potentially useful weapons from the opponent's sight.

With this knew lightning coat Sakumo can easily cut through normal weapons.

Once ready Sakumo releases the Tanto and sends it flying at the target, but the white chakra coat makes it so no one can touch it. The name Flying Hawk was given to show how it flies through the air.
